Noto, Sicily

While in Siracusa, we took a day trip to Noto to visit Planeta Buonivini, one of Sicily’s most influential wineries, for a tasting. Nestled in the Val di Noto, the estate is surrounded by a stunning landscape of rolling hills, olive trees, and almond groves. We were guided through a tasting of wines from the region, along with the estate’s olive oils, before sitting down to an incredible lunch prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients - a beautiful reflection of the land surrounding us.

We also spent some time exploring the historic city of Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Its honey-coloured buildings, ornate façades, and grand staircases make the entire city feel almost cinematic - and for a good reason. The famous steps of the Noto Cathedral have served as the backdrop for numerous film and television productions, including the second season of The White Lotus. Between the wine, the food, and the golden Baroque streets, Noto made for a perfect Sicilian day trip.

Siracusa, Sicily

Siracusa is exactly what I pictured Sicily to look like: timeworn, sunlit, and effortlessly charming. With a storied history spanning millennia, the city is rich with historical landmarks, winding streets, and layers of ancient architecture - and we were staying in the heart of it all: Ortigia.

The small island of Ortigia feels like stepping into another century, a moment in time seemingly preserved forever. Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Norman influences are woven throughout its architecture, creating a beautiful patchwork of the cultures and civilizations that have shaped the island over thousands of years.

We spent our few days in Siracusa wandering its serpentine streets, relaxing by the pool, and eating very, very well. Of all the places we visited in Sicily, Siracusa was my favourite.
